If FDA called today, could you produce your traceability records within 24 hours?

FDA now requires firms handling high-risk foods to maintain detailed traceability records and produce them upon request. This is not advisory guidance. It is federal law.

The FSPCA Traceability Rule Course is now available as a core, industry-oriented training that provides participants with the knowledge that is needed to understand and comply with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Final Rule on Requirements for Additional Traceability Records for Certain Foods, or Food Traceability Rule (FTR) under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

The participant course content is focused on providing the participant with an understanding of FTR record keeping requirements, how to recognize the requirements applicable to them based on the supply chain activities they perform, how traceability data is transmitted through the supply chain, and what is required in a Traceability Plan. The training also covers how companies may approach establishing food traceability programs and procedures, including supply chain and data considerations.

WHAT IS FSMA 204 on
The Traceability Rule?
The Food Safety Modernisation Act directed the FDA to establish science-based traceability recordkeeping requirements beyond what was previously mandated, targeting foods where enhanced records could most rapidly identify and contain contamination events.

The final rule “Requirements for Additional Traceability Records for Certain Foods (21 CFR Part 1, Subpart S)”, published in 2022, introduced a Food Traceability List (FTL) of higher-risk commodities and required that covered firms establish, maintain, and swiftly retrieve Critical Tracking Event (CTE) records with specified Key Data Elements (KDEs).

FDA Record Request Window
0 hr

Traceability records must be provided within 24 hrs of the FDA request, or within a timeframe agreed upon by FDA.

FTL Commodity categories
0 +

FTL (Food Traceability list) is a defined list of higher-risk commodities for which enhanced traceability records are required.

CTEs, KDEs, TLC

Core Traceability Elements
The rule operates through Critical Tracking Events, Key Data Elements at each event, and a Traceability Lot Code that links records across the supply chain from origin to destination.
